Can Your Sump Pump Handle the Melting Snow & Rain?

Winter Storm Stella brought record-breaking snow totals throughout the Hudson Valley. With temperatures finally set to rise this coming week snow and massive snow banks will continue to melt at an increasing rate.  This melting snow combined with recent rainfall can make your sump pump work over time.  Do you know how to test your sump pump to make sure your system is prepared?

To test your sump pump and ensure it is functioning properly follow these tips below:

  1. Locate the outside drain pipe and ensure it is free of dirt and debris and is in good condition. Blocked or damaged drain extensions will not move water away from your foundation properly and can cause backups and flooding.
  2. Fill a bucket or a large cooking pot with water and pour water into the sump pit.
  3. Watch the water level within the pit. The float should rise and the sump pump should kick on before the water reaches the top of the pit. As the pit empties, the sump pump should turn itself off.

Also, while this may seem silly – make sure the pump is plugged into a working outlet! If the pump isn’t getting electricity it will not function properly.  Some sump pumps come with a built-in battery backup, which is a good thing when the power goes out!
