How to Keep Your Cool During a HEAT WAVE!

Summer is officially here, and boy is it hot out!  Temperatures throughout the Hudson Valley are expected to hit nearly 100 degrees over the next few days, leaving residents desperate for a cool down. So, what can you do to keep cool when the temperatures are rising?

The National Weather Forecast suggests wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.

Inside you can help keep your cool by utilizing ceiling fans to help circulate cool air.  Plugging energy leaks with weather stripping and caulking, and utilizing curtains and shades on the sunny sides of your home will also provide additional cooling relief.

Extreme heat can not only be a discomfort, but also a health risk. The elderly and children are especially at risk for heat exhaustion. Warning signs for heat exhaustion and heat stroke can vary among individuals but  common signs may include:

Heat Exhaustion:
– Heavy sweating
– Muscle cramps
– Pulse rate: fast and weak
– Breathing: fast and shallow
– Nausea or vomiting
– Fatigue
– Weakness
– Headache and/or dizziness
Heat  Stroke:
– An extremely high body temperature (above  103 degrees)
– The absence of sweating
– Rapid pulse
– Difficulty breathing
– Throbbing headache
– Strange behavior  and/or hallucinations
– Confusion, agitation and  disorientation
